New York's Preeminent Family Club

The River Club opened on December 3, 1931 led by Kermit Roosevelt, Mrs. Joseph (Mollie) Edward Davis, Robert Sturgis Potter, Robert Early Strawbridge, Jr. and James Whitney Barney. The River Club was an immediate success amongst New York’s most prominent families, including the Astors, Roosevelts, and Vanderbilts.

A family club by design, with equality between men and women, The River Club set itself apart from the start as a full-service sporting and social club right in the heart of New York City. These attributes made the Club unique at the time and still make it unique to this day.

With a variety of athletic facilities, dining, and social spaces, we unveil the newest chapter in our beloved Club’s illustrious history.
